Conquer Back-to-School Anxiety with Mindfulness
If your child is feeling nervous, anxious, or even a little scared about going back to school—I want you to know, you’re not alone. And more importantly, there’s something we can do about it.
Back-to-school transitions can stir up all sorts of emotions, and that’s perfectly normal. But we don’t have to sit in fear or overwhelm. With a few simple mindfulness tools, we can help our children walk into the classroom with confidence, gratitude, and even excitement.
Let’s Start with the Truth: The Mind is Powerful
In my sessions, I always remind kids that they are the creators of their experience. I say it plainly:
“You create with your mind. You are very powerful.”
When children understand that their mind can work for them—not against them—it changes everything. Suddenly, that anxious feeling becomes something they can work with, not something they’re stuck in. And that’s a life skill worth teaching.
Gratitude Is Where the Magic Begins
One of the simplest and most transformative practices I teach is gratitude. Honestly, if a child learns just this one thing—how to practice gratitude daily—it can shift their entire school experience.
I tell them:
“If you master just gratitude, you’ll start to notice more fun, more friends, better days, easier tests, kinder teachers, and more joy overall.”
Gratitude changes our brain chemistry. It puts us into a receiving state. It turns nervous energy into positive anticipation. Try it, it works! 🙂
A Quick Mindfulness Reset (That Kids Actually Enjoy)
During my sessions, we always take a moment to breathe and reset. I guide children to sit comfortably, close their eyes, and take a deep breath in through the nose… and out through the mouth.
This grounding exercise gives them a chance to reconnect with the present moment and imagine their school day going well. I’ll ask them to picture their teachers being kind, their classmates being fun, and their day unfolding with ease.
Visualization is a powerful tool—and children are natural at it.
Affirmations That Shift Energy Fast
Words carry energy. And when children speak positively about themselves and their day, they start to feel more aligned and empowered. That’s why I include affirmations in every session.
Here are a few we used in our Back-to-School episode:
-
I am thankful that I have nice friends.
-
I am thankful that I can do school effortlessly.
-
I am thankful because I am learning so much.
-
I am thankful because I am never alone.
-
Everything works out for me.
These aren’t just feel-good phrases. They’re mental training tools. Repeating them helps children replace fear with focus and frustration with faith.
Rewriting the Story: From Fear to Excitement
I always guide children to imagine the best-case scenario—a school experience where they feel seen, appreciated, and supported. Not only does this help calm anxiety, but it actually helps create a blueprint in their minds for what’s possible.
When kids start saying “What if it goes great?” instead of “What if it goes wrong?”—that’s when the shift happens.
My Parting Words for Kids (and You)
Before I wrap up any session, I leave kids with this reminder:
You are loved. You are blessed. You are meant to be happy. And everything is always working out for you.
These aren’t just words. They’re seeds. And when we plant them consistently, they grow into confident, grounded, joyful kids.

If you’re a parent, teacher, or caregiver looking to support children with emotional wellness tools that actually work, this is the kind of practice I teach every day.
Mindfulness isn’t just about staying calm, it’s about claiming our power. And when children learn this early, they don’t just survive school, they thrive in it.
💛 With love and presence,
